2016 The Galaxy the Target for Fell Swoop

January 18th, 2016

Trainer Matthew Dale is yet to settle on a specific path for Fell Swoop through the approaching Autumn Carnival, but has confirmed the 2016 The Galaxy (1100m) as likely-to-be the major target for his stable star this time.

Fell Swoop has been a standout performer for Dale since first appearing on course competitively in 2014; posting an exceptional eight wins and one minors through only ten starts; highlighted by two successful performances at black type level.

Confident the conditions of The Galaxy 2016 will play into the strengths of the Not A Single Doubt gelding, Dale told AAP he is yet to settle on run of lead-up races for the horse but revealed a race like the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) is likely to figure.

“He’ll have a jump-out in a couple of weeks and from there we’ll home in on his first-up target, but his second-up target will most likely be The Galaxy,” Dale said.

“There’s a few options for where we start.

“The Oakleigh Plate is just such a pressure race, so I’d want to think that we’re going very well and quite forward first-up to target it.

“It’s three weeks prior to The Galaxy so it maps quite well on that front.”

Fell Swoop returned to racing in spring for fourth in a Randwick minor over 1000m; progressing to winning form in a pair of minor Sydney sprints before taking out each of the Listed Cup Club Stakes (1200m) and Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) most recently.

Dale has been thrilled with the benefit taken by the four-year-old through his time away from racing and is confident he will return an even better horse in 2016.

“I’m very happy with how he’s come back,” Dale said.

“He looks well. His work is good and mentally he seems to have matured somewhat so they’re the signs that I was looking for to get that next bit of improvement.

“But ultimately you don’t find out until you go to the racetrack.”

Nominations for the 2016 The Galaxy are due by midday, March 18th while a final field and barrier draw is scheduled to be completed and released two days later.
