2015 The Galaxy Next for Shamal Wind

March 11th, 2015

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield two weeks ago, trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed classy mare Shamal Wind will next target the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in Sydney on March 22nd.

Jumping from the gates well in the Oakleigh Plate, jockey Dwayne Dunn settled Shamal Wind off the pace off the race’s early leaders; receiving an ideal run in transit before displaying a keen turn of foot late to hit the line a length in the clear of closest rival Under The Louvre.

Thrilled with the form and condition displayed by the five-year-old since her impressive win, Smerdon revealed the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley may also figure as her next point of call; however the conditions of the 2015 The Galaxy appear ideal.

“If she goes to Sydney it’s the right distance so she’ll certainly be in the nominations and we’re aiming everything at this stage as if we’re going there,” Smerdon said.

“We’ll see what happens next week but the William Reid remains an option too.

“The Galaxy is an option and the William Reid is another option but we’re probably a week away before we commit to a decision.

“A lot of the good horses might be moving away from the William Reid because it’s so close to the T.J. Smith (1200m) in Sydney so it might not be as strong as we first thought and The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide is also an option for him later on as well.”

Posting a commendable race record of eight wins and a further eight minor place finishes through her 24 start career so far, Shamal Wind returned during the 2014 Spring Carnival for fourth in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) on August 23rd; progressing to third place finishes in each of the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Final (1200m).

Returning to the paddock following two proceeding third place finishes in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) and Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1100m), the Dubawi mare is so-far unbeaten in 2015 after taking out the Listed W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) first-up on January 26th.
