2015 The Galaxy an Option for Mossfun

January 28th, 2015

A standout performer over her maiden racing preparation through the 2014 autumn, classy filly Mossfun performed well at a Warwick Farm barrier trial on Tuesday morning appears in great condition ahead of her 2015 campaign, likely to be geared towards the open sprints including the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on March 21st.

Jumping from the gates well, Mossfun was immediately led to the fore of the pack; maintaining a good speed over the back straight and approaching the bend alongside talented filly Memorial.

Receiving an ideal run in transit, the daughter of Mossman kicked well in the final straight, but appeared to be holding back from top gear somewhat; hitting the line about a length behind the Godolphin filly.

Thrilled with the condition of Mossfun since her return to work, co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the team was yet to settle on a specific path for the three-year-old this time in, but are likely to set her on a course away from the likes of stable mates Chautauqua and Deep Field.

“She’s back and she’s on-song,” Hawkes told Racing Ahead.

“I don’t know (where she’ll go). We just wanted to see how she pulled up, but trialled really, really well so very, very happy to get her back, that’s for sure.”

Running fifth in a barrier trial prior to her racing debut, Mossfun immediately stamped her claims as one to watch when taking out the $253,000 Inglis Nursery Open (1000m) in December 2013; returning in 2014 for a first-up win in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m).

Continuing her perfect career start through the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m), this time by more than four lengths, the filly out of Eye For Fun suffered her first racing defeat at the hands of Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, but responded in the best way possible when cutting the corner and charging clear late to win the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.

Suffering several unfortunate ailments through the mid-late stages of 2014, Mossfun was unable to make her highly-anticipated comeback to racing during the Spring Carnival.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 The Galaxy is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday March 18th.
