2015 The Galaxy Likely to Figure for Bel Sprinter

December 9th, 2014

Winner of the 2013 edition of the featured sprint, trainer Jason Warren has revealed classy short distance specialist Bel Sprinter will be set on a course through the 2015 Autumn Carnival which will include an appearances in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in March.

Claiming eight wins and a further three minor places over his 27 start career so far, Bel Sprinter was unable to make much of an impact over five starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival but charged home to win the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) first-up this time before placing sixth in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) and seventh in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

Confirming the seven-year-old is enjoying a spell at his Mornington base, Warren told AAP he will not return Bel Sprinter to work until he has put on considerable weight, and will aim for a racing return in either of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) or the 2015 Galaxy Handicap in autumn.

“It will be either one of those races I would hope,” Warren said.

“The horse will be trained for a first-up result like we did this prep.

“He’s dynamite first-up so we’ll work to our strengths and try and get a bit more money in the bank.

“I just want to get some weight back on him first.

“He got to Perth (Winterbottom Stakes) and was 15 kilos lighter than what he needed to be and by the time he got home he was another 10 to 15 kilos lighter than he should be.

“As soon as his weight is back to normal then he will start work.”

Undoubtedly preferring autumn racing to appearances on course through spring, Bel Sprinter found career-best form through the 2013 edition of the Sydney Autumn Carnival; taking out The Galaxy first-up before placing a credible third behind equine superstar Black Caviar in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) before a trip abroad delivered an impressive second to Lucky Nine in the Group 1 International Sprint (1200m) in Singapore.
