Snitzerland Confirmed for 2014 The Galaxy Despite Heavy Weights

March 25th, 2014

While not satisfied with her allotted 56.5kgs for this Saturday’s The Galaxy (1100m), leading trainer Gerald Ryan has confirmed talented sprinter Snitzerland will still contest the major Group 1 event at Rosehill Gardens.

Winding towards an appearance in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 12th, Snitzerland is the highest rated runner included in nominations for The Galaxy and will be relying on a favourable barrier after receiving the event’s second heaviest weight; well trialled gelding Bel Sprinter allocated a race-high 58kgs.

“It’s a Group 1 on her home track” Ryan told TVN this morning.

“While I’m not satisfied with the weights, it is what it is, and she’ll run.

“She’s the highest rated horse in the race for a reason.”

Having finished an unlucky second to fellow-The Galaxy nominee Villa Verde in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on March 15th, Ryan said Snitzerland’s opponents will line up substantially better for the handicapping, while his entrant will be substantially inhibited.

“She meets all the other horses she races against the other day at worse weights” Ryan said.

“The winner meets her better at the weight; it’s just the way it is.

“She does have a great record on this track so I can accept why she has such a big weight, and although far from happy about it, we will take on the challenge.”

Having amassed eight wins and five places from only 18 race starts to date, Snitzerland was arguably the most consistent and impressive horse not to secure a Group 1 title throughout 2013, most notably placing a heartbreaking second to Bel Sprinter in last year’s edition of The Galaxy.

Returning to the track in scintillating form this preparation, Snitzerland finally broke through for a maiden title at the highest level of Australian racing first-up, when overcoming a particularly talented field in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) on February 15th.

With betting markets for this weekend’s Group 1 The Galaxy expected for Wednesday morning, Snitzerland is shaping outright favourite upon resumption.
