March 24th, 2014

An exciting field of 16 of the country’s leading sprinters have nominated for an appearance in the 2014 Group 1 The Galaxy  (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this weekend, including several previous winners at the highest level of Australian Racing.

Classy Queensland-based runner Temple Of Boom will be aiming to deliver trainer Tony Gollan a second Group 1 title in as many weeks in the 2014 The Galaxy after half-brother and stable mate Spirit Of Boom sealed a memorable win in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

While unable to secure a race win since claiming the 2012 edition of The Galaxy, Temple Of Boom has produced three largely consistent preparations, most notably through the spring of 2013.

Yet to hit peak condition in 2014 after finishing a disappointing eighth in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) first-up on March 15th, Gollan is confident of another successful tilt at The Galaxy this weekend, particularly if the track is soft.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 The Galaxy is classy Gerald Ryan-trained sprinter Snitzerland.

While unable to secure a maiden Group 1 victory over an impressive 2013 racing calendar, talented four-year-old Snitzerland claimed a strong win in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) first-up before finishing second to fellow 2014 Galaxy-nominee Bel Sprinter in the 2013 edition of this weekend’s Group 1 sprinting classic.

Returning to the track in near-career best condition in 2014, Snitzerland finally broke through for a maiden Group 1 title in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up before finishing a close second to fellow The Galaxy-nominee Villa Verde in the Challenge Stakes.

Ryan has underlined the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) as the major target for the Snitzel mare this season, and is confident of adding another major title to the list at Rosehill this weekend.

Following his standout 2013 autumn preparation which also included an unlucky second in the Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint 2013 (1200m) abroad in Singapore, Bel Sprinter has been unable to return to peak condition, highlighted by disappointing results in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Challenge Stakes so far this year.

The champion of the 2013 The Galaxy, trainer Jason Warren is confident the Bel Esprit gelding can return to form and successfully defend his only Group 1 title this weekend, but will have to draw an ideal barrier and find good position early if any chance.

Amassing three wins and two places from only ten race starts to date, Villa Verde built to a competitive fourth behind Zoustar in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in a consistent 2013 spring preparation, and has appeared to have returned to the track in top form this season, having claimed the Challenge Stakes first-up.

Currently amidst a three race winning streak, exciting four-year-old Kencella has been nominated for a first attempt at a Group 1 race in this weekend’s The Galaxy, having comfortably blown the field away in the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill last weekend.

Having now claimed five wins and two places from seven starts this preparation, Kencella is arguably the formed runner of all nominees for the 2014 The Galaxy and offers trainer John O’Shea a genuine chance of success this weekend.

Trainer Joseph Pride is poised to dominate the final field of the 2014 The Galaxy, having nominated Rain Affair, See The World and Tiger Tees.

Rain Affair has been disappointing in two competitive starts this season, but is a proven contender in autumn races, having claimed four wins and two second in seven starts in 2012.

See The World has secured nine wins and eleven places from 34 race starts to date, and has returned to the track in good order this preparation, finishing an unlucky second in the Ibis Milano Dinner Special Maiden (1100m) first-up.

While the least experienced of the three Pride-trained stable mates, Tiger Tees arguably poses the biggest threat to the 2014 Galaxy, having secured the Listed Falvelon (1200m) first-up on February 22nd.
